Does neat video handles dropout from old VHS tapes

Hi,

is there a way to use neatvideo to remove dropouts (regular noise that looks like horizontal white scratches)? I've given it a try quickly yesterday without success.

Thanks!

I don't konw if this is the kind of noise NV have been made for.

The filter i've been typicaly used to remose VHS dropout is a vertical
median filter with a threshold level. It work correctly.

What software are you using ? If it's VDub, i can provide something
to you.

Ok, here a link to my pack of filters :
http://dl.free.fr/qXfb5FsxH

Get the rar file, unpack it in "plugins" of VDub.

Ok, there is a lot of filters. Some have name spoke for them.
The filters you may need are :
Median V2.0.0
Chroma Shifter V1.0.0

Ignore alls VHS filters, they are now totaly useles with filters
like NV !!!

Median filter : You can chose the filter mode, i suggest you chose
"Vertical". Filter size is the number of pixels used around the
center wich the filter will use to do the median. Try 1 or 2, but normaly
not more to reduce side effect.
Threshold is the min differance value betwen the pixel value and
median value for the filter to be applied. Default value are for YCbCr
mode, in RGB, default value are 20,20,20. Maybe try to filter only Y
(if your video is in YCbCr mode), i dont know if VHS dropouts are only
on Y channel or all. But, you can disable filter on some channels if
you want.
Setting/Test mode : allow you to see where the filter will be applied,
the pixels will be marked on high colors. Use it to adjust the size and
the threshold level to have "only" the dropout filtered.
Interlace mode : Check it if you work on interlaced video.
Note : Median filter is slow, and speed decrease as filter size increase.

Chroma shift : Allow you to shift chroma as you want, often useful
on VHS.

If it's not the case, i strongly suggest you to get the last version
of VDub (1.8.6), and of course, to work with YCbCr video.

Tel me when you've got the file, i remove it after.

Thank you! it worked like a charm. My star wars effect is now gone. I looked for a while on the web to find plugins to remove dropouts without finding this one... anyway, again thx!

Hi jpsdr,

I have the same problem as mentioned by spatry. Could you be so nice and give me some information about the Median V2.0 plugin you have mentioned. Is it something you have coded by yourself or can I buy it somewhere ?

Thanks for your help.

Hello.

It's something i've coded by myself.

I've put back my package filters here :
http://dl.free.fr/qDCxCW4jX

For instructions, read what i've posted before.

Hi jpsdr,

thanks for uploading the filters again.
The Median filter works good for my needs.

Maybe you could give a brief description about all the included filters ?

Thanks again

Ronny

The others, some name speak for themselves, otherwise, realy
don't want to spend time explaining, as some are very specific
for my very specific needs.

For VHS, the both wich may be the most usefull are already explained
in my previous post.

Hello,

I've just joined and like the above poster, while I think Neat does a superb job with noise, I'm now left with clean recordings spoilt by drop-out.

I wonder whether anyone could let me have a copy of the Median V2.0.0 Virtualdub filter as mentioned above by jpsdr? I've searched for it but without success.

The one I'm currently using works well on drop-outs but isn't good with interlaced material and the Median filters built into AE and Prem are too coarse and unconfigurable.

E-mail address: ytv321@tesco.net

Many thanks,

RC.

Try to get it here : http://dl.free.fr/r0jFpMegI
You have to :
- Play the video (on the right).
- Type the word(s) between " just under the video, or, sometime, just click on the video. The word appears just a little after the video is started.
- Click on Valider et télécharger le fichier.
May help :
"Etape" (or "étape") = step
"télécharger" = download

I don't know exactly what you'll encounter...
