Neat Video 2.6 on Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10

The question is whether the Neat Video 2.6 would work on Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 - the consumer version of the Vegas software? News section of NeatVideo site on October 11 seem to state the Neat Video 2.6 plug-in availability only for PRO version of Vegas. Some other places on the site however denote availability of the plug-in for Sony Vegas Movie Studio (consumer version) too.

My main SD DV video workflow is based around Canopus Edius 4.61. Since there is no NeatVideo plug-in for Edius I was looking for a least expensive, yet stable and convenient way to host Neat Video on some other video editing program. After reading and comparing user feedback on consumer NLE's my decision was to order Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. Now while the software is on the way I began to study Neat Video site in greater detail to find out if the Neat Video 2.6 indeed is compatible with the newest consumer version (10) of Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Unfortunately I was not able to figure it out with a great degree of certainty if it is so. Please confirm if it is the case.

At some point it I've looked at VirtualDub as a host software. While it seems to wok acceptably, according to the news section of the site there are no recent plug-in updates for VirtualDub during last two years. Other minor issue (observation) is that the output file sizes in VirtualDub are 10 times of the original Microsoft DV (25Mbit/s) format. While this might be good for the quality I'm just wandering is that really necessary to have them 10 times bigger than Microsoft DV?. So some kind of compression back to DV format (25Mbit/s) within VirtualDub would be handy.

The news meant to say that the new version of Vegas is supported too. Of course earlier versions continue to be supported as well. Studio will work too.

Yes, and I recommend to download the Demo version of the plug-in (32-bit version) and directly test it in Vegas Studio before purchase. Always test directly before purchase.

Which means the current version works well and contains no serious bugs. Also, there will be a refresh update soon too. We are preparing it now.

I guess you haven't set up the output compression in VirtualDub to make it actuall compress the output clip. This is a basic question about regular use of that application. The same question will arise with any other host application that has to produce compressed clips. I recommend to check the documentation of the corresponding host application and if necessary ask its support people to assist. It is certainly possible to get properly compressed output with any host application, otherwise why would they exist at all.

Thank you,

Thank you very much for the prompt response! :D

I'm really glad the plugin will fit Vegas Movie Studio 10. And thank you for the valuable hints!

--------------------------
Just one more "short" question as it relates to choice of plugins:

Some plugin versions have a high-bitdepth rendering (for AE, Pr, FC, OpenFX hosts). It would be nice to know if these versions of plugins are able to produce markedly visible supperior result when comparet to standard-bitdepth rendering.

My work includes following types of video: high gain digital SD PAL video (poorly lit environments) and digitized noisy analogue Hi8 or S-VHS footage.

In another words when focusing on the quality of the end result does it make sense to strive for high-bitdepth rendering at any cost?

I assume that there might be some cases when high-bitdepth rendering has more important role to play than in others. It would be interesting to find out what are the cases when high-bitdepth rendering may make a difference and if this is relevant to my work.

Thanks in advance!

High-bitdepth rendering is useful when (1) the host application supports it and (2) you already use it in your workflow in that application. In this case, Neat Video will help you keep your workflow in high bitdepth all the way. If your workflow is not high-bitdepth, if you use 8-bit data, then there is little benefit in using high-bitdepth rendering, even when supported by the host application. Please check your current workflow, see if using high-bitdepth rendering (without Neat Video) gives you any better results. If it does then with Neat Video it will also be better, because Neat Video will support your high-bitdepth workflow.

Thanks, this is very helpful indeed!

Quick look into the discussions of Grassvalley forums confirms that the older versions like Canopus Edius 4.6 includes only 8-bit timeline, e.g. http://ediusforum.grassvalley.com/forum ... 791&page=2

The 10-bit timeline along with the new codec HQX is only available in newest Canopus Edius 6, e.g. http://ediusforum.grassvalley.com/forum ... bit+10-bit

So meanwhile I conclude that it would not be worth striving for high-bitdepth rendering NeatVideo plugins as on my main workflow I have 8-bits anyway.

Thanks again and have a very good day.
