Neatimage Pro 6 crashing my PC badly

Post by quatermass »

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3 (with the most recent updates) and it is AV and rootkit protected.

I've discovered with my relatively new PC :

Mainboard : Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
Chipset : AMD RD770
Processor : AMD Phenom X3 8750 @ 2400 MHz
Physical Memory : 4096 MB (2 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : ATI Radeon HD 3470
CPU temp = 44C, mainboard = 34C, cores at 22C
(Drives are chkdsk and defragmented regularly).

and Neatimage Pro 6.0, that if I queue up 30 or more images to be processed that the computer freezes dead after it goes through about half way. Total frozen. No cursor movement, no keyboard activity -dead.

I wait and wait and it doesn't come back. So all I can do is Power cycle.

I try again and it did the same. The original jpeg images from my camera all look OK.

Today I tried just the one image and it froze solid.

As I am not getting any diagnostic logs, can Neatimage authors help out why your program seems to be causing my computer to crash?

Not noticed this happening when I run other programs even more CPU heavy like Virtualdub.

I need some advice.

Will turning off the multiprocessor support option in NI help?

:)

This is a typical sigh of a hardware issue. Overheating of CPU or RAM or something similar. Please try to reduce the corresponding clocks until the issue disappears.

VirtualDub is not necessarily more heavy.

Please try that, less cores will make less heat for sure.

The best solution would be to identify the hardware problem and fix it.

It can't be a heat issue. The cores are hardly ticking over warm.
I've the mother of all heatsinks on it and as you may have read, I included the temperatures of the cores.

It takes NI about 20 secs to crash.

Vitrtualdub is hitting the CPUs more as I can do a job that takes 20 minutes and its fine.

Hmm, I wonder if it's worth my grief, to update my ATI graphic drivers?

Neat Image doesn't directly use graphic drivers, so that shouldn't make any difference.

I would try to underclock first (both CPU and RAM, each may be responsible). Also, there may be some CPU settings in BIOS Setup worth checking. Perhaps something is not properly enabled there.

Well I'll have a look. But it's been fine for the last 8 months.

Thanks.

Is it true there has been no new release for 8 months now? Not even bug releases?

There were no serious bugs detected in the recent months though it is possible that builds with minor updates were published.

If there was a serious bug in Neat Image that caused the problem like that you observe now, we would receive a lot of feedback from our users. This is not the case, so I guess it is something specific to the hardware you use now. You can easily check that by running the same version of Neat Image on another computer. To identify the cause of the problem I would try to check and adjust the hardware parameters.

I recommend to send an e-mail to support [at] neatimage.com and describe all symptoms in details.

Having same problem since upgrading to AMD X4 from Core 2 Du

I have the same problem since I upgraded my CPU to Phenom II X4.
I'm using standalone home version.
tried upgrading from XP Home SP3 to Win 7 Ultimate. Still same problem.
Everything else works except for NI. Have to go to task manager and kill it there.

The original poster reported freezing of the whole computer, while your description says that you can use Task Manager to kill the task, so it is not the same problem. One application hanging is not the same as system freezing. It is something else.

Do you run any antivirus? Which one?
