Bit Depth Question

I want to use the best bit-depth that's available to me, but it looks like Neat Video is down compressing for some reason (or something). I'm getting different bit depths depending on where I look. My source footage is 24 bit U (I don't know what that U means). Then when I open the file with Neat Video it says Frame: 8-bit RGB. Any idea why I'm going down from 24 to 8 simply by opening Neat Video, and how do I use Neat Video with 24 bit?

3 color channels x 8 bits per channel = 24 bits

Also, Neat Video does not change the bitdepth. It only reports the bitdepth as provided by the host application.
