Adjusting Temporal Filter

Post by Gerald Sr. »

I would like to know what is the best settings for the Temporal Filter to remove extra noise in a video? The instructions is kind of vague.

There is no settings that would be best for all possible videos (otherwise we would simply fix those settings in the temporal filter and not let user adjust them), everything depends on the video you work with. Well, the default settings could be considered a kind of compromise but you still have to adjust these settings to get the optimum results. Some experimentation is necessary.

I recommend to adjust the temporal filter in the following way:

- leave the threshold on the default;
- adjust the temporal radius and observe how the rendered preview changes; usually a higher radius means stronger but slower filtration; try to increase the radius to achieve the desired level of noise reduction while keeping the processing time reasonable;
- if you see that the noise filtration affects moving objects in the video, adjust the Temporal filter threshold (lower values mean more sensitive to moving objects).
