Crawling Mass

I have a similar situation to one mentioned in another posting from Dec 11, 2012, where the film grain noise on a background wall turns into a creeping crawling mass after noise reduction. I am totally wet behind the ears and have just started using your software on an iMac with FCPX 10.0.8.

Would like to upload short before and after clips. Not sure I can cram them on my ISP's server — only allows up to about 15 MB.

Is there another way to upload the clips to you? If so, will ProRes work or should it be H264?

First of all, try to render out using a lossless format to exclude possibility of compression artifacts (in this sense lossless is better than ProRes and ProRes is better than H264).

If that doesn't change the results, double-check the noise profile. Make sure it is built using the procedures described in the video tutorials.

Then, try to increase the temporal radius from 1 to 3-5 and see if that improves the results.

If none of the above helps, please prepare a simple test project with one short clip and NV added it that clip. Make sure that this project allows to reproduce the problem if one opens this project and renders it. Please keep the file size (of the zip with the project file and clip) under 20MB and e-mail it to support [at] neatvideo.com for analysis.

Thank you,
Vlad

I should mention that this is very old film, 1927 in fact. I can see where NV might take the fluctuating density on the wall (due to inherent fluctuating film exposure) and turn it into an undulating pattern of shadow and light; not really the fault of NV I guess.

If I can find a way to make the clip samples small enough to email, I'll send them. Else, this may be as good as it gets. Stay tuned.

When you say post a project, what exactly do you mean by a "project" ? Do you mean simply posting the two clips by themselves, or something within the Neat Video program?

Neither really. One problem with FCPX is that saving a project as an external file (to send it to someone or simply to transfer to another computer) is not so simple as in FCP7 or in other video editing applications.

What we need is to set up a test case project in FCPX, so that it would be exactly the same on your computer and on our computers, so that we could receive the same results. One way to achieve that with FCPX would be the following:
1) please create such a fresh new test project (as simple one as possible) with one clip and one effect;
2) make sure it reproduces the problem you want to demonstrate;
3) write down the steps you took to create this project, all of them, step by step;
4) send us that original clip used in your test project; also add your step by step notes on how to set up that test project;
5) we will follow your steps, use your clip, set up the same project and reproduce the problem.

And then we will try to identify the cause of the problem.

My current guess it is a codec issue. This can be tested by replacing the output codec with a lossless one.

Thank you,
Vlad
