Distorted Video Clips

HI,

Apologies if this is a straightforward question but having looked at the FAQ and other forum posts I cannot work out what I am doing wrong. I am using FCPX 10.0.8

My source video is 1920 X 1080 / 25FPS. I have used the trial version and thought the problem was just with the trial version but have now purchased the Pro version and still have the problem.

When I apply the Reduce Noise effect to a clip and then launch the Options window, I get a distorted / clipped view of the Clip.

Note in the bottom right I seem to have 1920 X 540 clip properties.

I can apply the effect and in FCPX Viewer it still looks OK, despite the strange profile window.

However, when I render I get a similarly distorted render to that shown in the Options window.

Please could you explain what I am doing wrong. I have watched the tutorial video and scanned forum.

Many thanks,

Chris

1920x1080 is the size of the full frame in such a fullHD clip.

If the clip is progressive then the video stream of that clip consists of individual frames of the same size: 1920x1080

If the clip is interlaced (as in your case) then the video stream of that clip consists of twice-larger set of individual fields of the smaller pixel size: 1920x540
Yes, each individual field is two times less tall than the full frame.

When you put such an interlaced clip into an interlaced sequence/project in FCPX, FCPX also works with those individual fields (1920x540). So when FCPX wants Neat Video to process the video data from that clip, FCPX sends such an individual field (not full frame, but one field) to Neat Video to process. Neat Video simply displays what is it has been given by FCPX.

That is not a fault, nor a problem. That is the normal way FCPX works with interlaced video data and Neat Video simply supports that from its side. To differentiate the interlaced vs progressive cases, Neat Video explicitly states either "Field" or "Frame" in its window, to help you control the situation.

If you want to work with progressive frames then you need to adjust the sequence/project properties in FCPX itself to make it a progressive project. Then FCPX will deinterlace that original 1080i clip and will work with full frames from then on (including in Neat Video).

Thank you,
Vlad
