Any particular recomendations for profiling a film scanner - specifically a Canon FS4000US. Should I photograph the test target and analyse the processed film or is there a better way?

If you already have a shot of a suitable target then just use it. Or take a photo of the test target (print it out first) and then scan it in each of the scanner modes to build noise profiles from these scans.

Film Scanner Profile Procedures

The custom profile instructions for film scanners seem to indicate that the test shot should be in focus, but scanned out of focus.

If the custom profile is to correct for grain, I suspect that I am reading this wrong, and that it's the opposite ... shoot the test target out of focus, and scan in focus.

Which is right?

Thanks, muchly.

You are right, shot out of focus and scan in focus. In this way, you will scan the grain and no real image details.

We will correct the instruction to make this more clear. Thank you for the question.
