Using NI's Sharpening to produce same results as PS UnSharp?

Post by Rick Bruce »

Hi folks,

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to make NI's sharpening tools emulat the UnSharp mask of Photoshop 7.

I generally use the setting of :

Amount : 180%
Radius: 0.3pixels
Threshold: 0levels

I've played around with NI's settings but cant find a similar look :(

Many thanks,

Rick

I don't think you'll find any settings which come close. Personally, I've found that there are times which I prefer NI's sharpening over USM (and other times that I prefer USM.) There's no hard rules here, and often you just have to play around and see what looks good.

Usually, however, I only apply NI's sharpening in cases where the noise reduction results in dramatic softening of the image (such as dark 3200 ISO images.) Even in those cases, I only apply a small amount - enough to compensate for any softening. Why? Because when I use NI, it's one of the first things I do in my workflow, and sharpening is usually the very last.

Noise reduction is usually a requirement for me, while sharpening is only applied in varying degrees based on what I intend to do with the image.
