NI Linux version Hangs under Ubuntu 10.04

I installed the 32-bit linux version on my ageing AMD Athlon PC (2GB of ram) with a Geforce FX5200 graphics card, and using the Nvidia-173 driver from the Ubuntu repository.
After some tinkering with links to libOpenCL drivers (from the Nvidia-current package) I got it to run and open a file but when I try to do any processing the program hangs with the usual rotating circle symbol.
In an attempt to see what was happening I also tried the command line version in a terminal but there was no error message on pressing "return" after the command, just the stationary cursor.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?
Thanks
Nigel
